Workism Is Making Americans Put Off the Dinner and the Walk

Work gets the dates, the reminders and the best hours of the week. The dinner and the walk get what’s left. Here’s why, and what changes it before Saturday.

A filled month in The Ledger: June, written in by hand

A real June, filled in by hand.

A post that sounds familiar

The weekend is a few days away. If it goes like the last one, Saturday is for sitting down, and the dinner and the walk move to next week again.

A man wrote this on Reddit, about the job he still goes to every week:

“I just try to get through the work week and by the time the weekend comes I don't feel like doing anything but sit.”r/AskMenOver40

A week like that, written out

On Monday, you tell your wife you'll take her to dinner on Thursday, at the place you both like. By Wednesday a meeting has moved, and Thursday turns into “next week, for sure.”

The walk goes the same way. You get home at 6:40, you eat, you sit down, and your shoes stay by the door.

Friday night you're tired. On Saturday you sit, and after that week you've earned it. Then it's Monday again, and the dinner is still on the list.

Nothing went wrong on any one day. The cost shows up in the month. Four weeks like that, and the dinner can move four times without anyone writing it down.

Why the dinner gets moved and the meeting doesn't

Work comes with dates. The meeting is at nine on Tuesday. The report is due on Friday. Your phone reminds you of both.

The dinner has no date, and the walk has no time. They go on a list called “later,” and nothing reminds you of later.

So when the week fills up, the thing with a date gets done, and the thing without one gets moved.

A man of 62 put it plainly on Reddit, on the day he called his boss to retire after about fifty years in the same line of work:

“I really want to spend my time on things I want to do, not what I need to do to get paid.”r/retirement

A dinner with his wife can have a date on the page this month.

What helps, and how men already keep track

Two things help. First, give the one thing you keep moving a real date. Then write one line each night, so at the end of the month you can see what happened to it.

Here are three ways men already keep track.

1

An app or the calendar on your phone

It's in your pocket, and it reminds you about the dentist on time.

What it leaves you with: the plan. When the dinner gets moved, you drag it to next week. Nothing shows how many times it moved.

2

A calendar on the kitchen wall

You and your wife both see it every morning.

What it leaves you with: what was booked. The square says “dinner, Thursday” whether you went or not.

Each of these holds the plan. None of them holds what happened.

The Ledger: the plan, the date and what happened

That's why we made The Ledger. It's a hardcover book with a dashboard for every month. Each month sits on two facing pages, so you see it all at once.

Each night: one line and a score
Month end: read it back
  • At the start of the month: three GOALS, one each for Health, Wealth and Mind. Then one ADVENTURE: you write the plan with a date next to it, and when the day comes, you write what happened.
  • Each night: one HIGHLIGHT from the day, a SATISFACTION score out of 5, a tick in the HABITS grid and a mark on the SLEEP graph.
  • At the end of the month: a RATING out of 5 for Health, Wealth, Mindset, Relationships and Satisfaction.

It takes about ninety seconds a night and fifteen minutes at the end of the month. No page has a date printed on it, so you can start this week. It holds 12 months.

Here's an example week:

Picture a man of 58 who still works, some weeks full time and some weeks less. On the first night of the month, under ADVENTURE, he writes: “Dinner with my wife at the Italian place. Friday the 14th.”

Tuesday's highlight is “Walked 20 minutes after work.” Wednesday's is “Late meeting.” He gives that day a 2. Saturday's is “Sat and watched the game.” He gives it a 4, because sitting was the plan.

On the 14th, he writes in the box what happened. If the dinner moved, the box shows that too. When his wife asks about Friday, the box shows whether the dinner happened.

★★★★★
“I've bought and abandoned so many planners but what made this one stick were the undated pages. I skipped maybe two weeks in June and just picked it back up where I left off without that restart guilt. The monthly layout is doing more for me than any app ever did.”

Got it last week and its so easy to use, a quick 5 minutes each night to write down your thoughts for the day, while also being able to keep track of your habits and goals. The front cover and page material is top level, feels like an actual personal journal that you treasure and want to keep safe. Must get!!!!

Having purchased many journals and notebooks before, the ledger really stood out to me as something completely different. By being structured and having helpful hints and tips throughout the pages has really changed the way I run my life, making it more productive and helping me achieve my daily goals better. Would definitely recommend, one of the best books I have owned with great feel and nice heavy pages!

I've been using the Ledger every morning for the past few weeks, and it's quickly become part of my daily routine. It only takes a few minutes to fill out, but having all my tasks, goals and thoughts in one place helps me start each day with a clear plan. I've genuinely noticed that spending just a few minutes each morning makes my whole day feel more productive and focused. The quality of the Ledger is also crazy, beyond premium. Highly recommened
